We all want obedient kids. But in our homeschool days, it’s easy to fall into the trap of behavior management instead of heart discipleship. Stop hitting your sister. Sit still. Finish your reading. Sound familiar?
Paul David Tripp, in his book Parenting, reminds us: our job isn’t to fix our kids—it’s to point them to Jesus. That means every act of discipline is a chance to shape their heart, not just modify their behavior.
Try this gospel-based approach:
- Connect before you correct. Pause to understand the “why” behind the
behavior. - Bring it back to the heart. Ask: “What’s going on in your heart right now?” or
“What does God say about how we treat others?” - Point to grace. Remind them that Jesus forgives and helps us grow. Discipline
becomes a path toward growth, not guilt.
Homeschooling gives us the time and space to disciple in ways school never could.
Let’s make the most of it.
